Roberto Borrell
Dec 5th, Saturday 12:15 pm Pacific Time
ConCLAVE # 31 Musicality 4 Dancers, curated by Kati Hernandez.
Featuring maestro Roberto Borrel. Former member of Cuba’s Conjunto Folklórico Nacional, co-founder of the orchestra La Moderna tradición.
Theme: Abakua; Its Influence on Cuban Music.
Roberto Borrell once again uncaps the path of Cuban music. In this lecture he demonstrates how the rhythms heard in Rumba, Timba, Cha Cha Cha and Son are rooted in the music from Calabar, Africa.
Transported to Cuba by centuries of slave trade, the music evolved inside the secret plantes (ceremonies) of the Abakua Societies. By analyzing and defining instrumentation and musical patterns Roberto draws the connection between modern day Cuban music and one of its sources, the Ekpe people of Africa, over 300 years ago.
